Like people, cats need plenty of mental stimulation, especially while you are away at work. As you may have noticed, when they get bored cats tend to make their own 'fun' which can sometimes mean getting into things they shouldn't!
Here are a few tips on how to keep your favourite friend occupied while you are away from home.

Toys

Toys are one of the easiest ways to keep cats amused. In fact some cats have been known to get rather obsessive about almost anything that moves, squeaks or jumps!
When choosing a toy for your cat, make sure it is small enough to be pushed around, but large enough not to be swallowed. A ping-pong ball, a crumpled paper ball or an empty toilet roll is ideal. Some cats enjoy playing with a catnip toy or a tasty treat hidden in an old cardboard tube, while others like to rustle under newspapers.
Other toy ideas include:
- Sturdy corks
(regularly check them for excessive wear)
- Empty wrapping paper rolls with a long piece of colourful string attached
- Empty lipstick containers
- Old tennis balls
- Socks stuffed with old stockings
Whatever you choose to give your cat, don't forget to rotate your cat's toys regularly - they are easily amused but quickly become bored with the same toys day after day!

Boxes

Cardboard boxes are great for hiding in - in fact a game of hide and seek in a box is hard to beat! Just be sure the box is fairly sturdy so that your cat can climb out after it climbs in.

Climbing Frames

As you may have noticed, cats love to climb. Providing shelves, ladders or climbing poles, not only helps keep them amused throughout the day, it is also a great sources of exercise.

Cat Flaps

Install a cat flap that leads to an enclosed outdoor run or garden so they can get out and about safely. If your cat is confined indoors, make sure it has access to a window or patio door so it can see outside - it's always nice to know what is going on!
